Wonderful
Trip went very smoothly and was very well organized. Easy to highlight is Machu Picchu, but our visit of Amantani island on Lake Titicaca was a real interesting and unique experience. Read more.
There is no color in Peru — or anywhere else — quite like what you see at Rainbow Mountain. The sandstone peaks are layered in vivid bands of red, orange, yellow, turquoise, and green, the result of millions of years of mineral deposits exposed by glacial erosion. The mountain sat under ice until relatively recently; as the glaciers retreated over the last few decades, the colors emerged. What you’re walking toward is geology becoming visible in real time.
The hike is one day, starting at 4:00 AM in Cusco and returning by 5:00 PM. The altitude is real — the Rainbow Mountain summit is at 5,020 m and the Red Valley sits above 5,000 m. This is the highest point reached on any tour in the Machu Picchu Peru Lovers catalog. The hike itself is 1.5 hours up from the trailhead to the summit, with an additional 45-minute walk to the Red Valley after. The views — of the mountain colors, of the Ausangate glacier (6,384 m), of the alpaca herds grazing at altitude — are unlike anything else in the region.
One important note before booking: this trek should be your last activity in Cusco, not your first. The altitude requires proper acclimatization. Three days in Cusco before Rainbow Mountain is the minimum. The mountain rewards preparation and punishes impatience.
Machu Picchu Peru Lovers runs this route with a maximum of 8 hikers, a professional guide, and a cook who prepares a proper breakfast at the start of the day.
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging | Max Altitude: 5,020 m (16,466 ft) | Group Size: Up to 8 people | Transport: Private van
Day highlight: The Rainbow Mountain summit at 5,020 m — a landscape of vivid mineral-banded sandstone with the Ausangate glacier directly above and the Red Valley beyond
The van picks up from your Cusco hotel at 4:00 AM. The departure time is fixed — the drive to the trailhead takes three hours, and an early start means arriving before the larger tour groups that leave later from Cusco.
The three-hour drive heads south through the South Valley — the route passes Inca agricultural terraces on the hillsides, traditional villages still organized around communal highland life, and high Andean valley terrain that opens progressively as the road climbs. The Ausangate mountain range begins to appear above the horizon before you reach the trailhead.
At Llacto (4,638 m), the first stop is breakfast. The cook team has everything ready: a hot, full breakfast served in the early morning at over 4,600 m, with alpacas and llamas grazing in the fields around the breakfast point. The air is cold and sharp. Take time here before the hike begins.
From the trailhead, the ascent to Rainbow Mountain takes approximately 1.5 hours following a stream through a desert valley. The terrain is open, wide, and fully exposed — no shade, no tree cover, just the valley floor, the stream, and the glacier-capped peaks above. Soaring eagles and Caracara falcons are commonly visible in the thermals. The guide points out Andean wildlife and explains the geology of the changing landscape as the altitude increases.
At approximately 4,800 m, the trail steepens significantly for the final 600 m to the summit. This section cannot be done by horse — everyone walks the final stretch regardless of horse rental. The thin air above 4,800 m is felt clearly. The guide sets the pace; follow it.
Rainbow Mountain summit (5,020 m) — the bands of color across the sandstone face are visible as you approach but fully reveal themselves from the summit. The mineral layers — reds, oranges, yellows, greens, turquoise — are arranged in horizontal strata that the glacier erosion has exposed over the last few decades. The Ausangate glacier above, the colored peak below, the open Andean sky. Approximately 30 minutes at the top before moving to the Red Valley.
The Red Valley is a 45-minute walk from the Rainbow Mountain summit. The iron-oxide deposits in this valley produce a deep, saturated red that is a completely different visual register from the multi-colored mountain above. The valley is quieter than the summit — most groups turn back from Rainbow Mountain without continuing here. The Red Valley is worth the extra time.
The return descent follows the same trail back to the trailhead. Downhill at this altitude is significantly easier than the ascent but still requires careful footing on loose stone.
After the return to Llacto, lunch is served before the van loads for the three-hour drive back to Cusco. Arrive at your hotel at approximately 5:00 PM.

On payments:
Group pricing scales with the final number of participants. Each person’s rate is determined by the total group size once the group is confirmed:
| Group Size | Price Per Person |
|---|---|
| 2 persons | $150 USD |
| 3 persons | $125 USD |
| 4 persons | $99 USD |
| 5 persons | $80 USD |
| 6 or more persons | $70 USD |
Minimum 2 participants. Maximum 8 per group.
How the group pricing works:
The per-person rate is determined by the final group size — meaning that if you book as a pair at $150 per person, and a third person joins the same departure, everyone’s rate adjusts to $125 per person. The rate you pay reflects who is in the group when it departs, not when you book.
This structure means that booking early as a small group and having others join can reduce your cost. It also means that if you’re a solo traveler or a couple looking for the most accessible price, traveling in a group of 4 or more brings the per-person rate to $99 or below.

Group pricing clarification
For group service, the per-person rate is determined by the final group size on the day of departure, not at the time of booking. If you book as 2 persons but a third person joins, everyone’s rate adjusts to the 3-person rate. The final per-person cost is settled in Cusco when the group is confirmed.
Hotel drop-off
Return drop-off to your Cusco hotel is included, arriving approximately 5:00 PM. If your accommodation is in the Sacred Valley (Ollantaytambo, Urubamba), coordinate with us at booking.
The Rainbow Mountain Trek is available year-round on any date, with a minimum of 2 participants.
No government trail permits are required for this route. Booking is flexible — last-minute reservations are possible in most cases. Contact our reservations team to check availability and confirm your group.
A few practical seasonal notes:
Altitude note on timing: If you are doing multiple activities in Cusco, do Rainbow Mountain last. The 5,020 m altitude requires maximum acclimatization. Every day you spend in Cusco before this trek increases your chances of reaching the summit in good condition.
Rainbow Mountain — the geology
The colored bands visible on the mountain face are the result of different mineral compositions in the sandstone strata:
These layers were deposited over millions of years in a marine and then highland environment. Until recently, the entire formation was covered by glacial ice — the rapid retreat of the Ausangate glaciers over the last few decades exposed the colors that were previously invisible. What you see at Rainbow Mountain today was not visible to most Andean communities until approximately 2015.
Ausangate Mountain
Ausangate (6,384 m) is the highest peak in the Cusco region and one of the most sacred mountains in the Andean world — a major apu (mountain deity) that governs weather, fertility, and livestock across the surrounding highland territory. The annual Qoyllur Riti festival, one of the largest indigenous pilgrimage events in Peru, takes place at the base of Ausangate and draws tens of thousands of Andean pilgrims. The glacier system on Ausangate feeds the rivers that supply water to communities across the entire Cusco valley.
The Quechua communities at the trailhead
The communities near the Llacto trailhead maintain traditional Quechua dress and culture. The specific hat styles worn by men and women in this area communicate geographic origin, marital status, and community affiliation — a textile-encoded language that your guide can translate. The horse owners at the trailhead are members of these communities; their income from tourism is a direct supplement to their highland agricultural economy.
Transport summary
Altitude — the primary consideration on this trek
Despite its moderate classification in terms of hiking distance, the Rainbow Mountain Trek is genuinely challenging due to altitude. At 5,020 m, this is the highest point reached on any tour in the Machu Picchu Peru Lovers catalog — higher than Dead Woman’s Pass on the Classic Inca Trail, higher than the Salkantay Pass.
Weather
The weather at 5,000 m is unpredictable in every season. Storms develop rapidly and can bring snow, rain, hail, and high wind with little warning. Carry rain gear and warm layers regardless of the forecast. In the rainy season (November–March), conditions at the summit are particularly variable.
Strikes and demonstrations
Strikes and demonstrations are common in Peru and can affect road access to the trailhead. We will always try to keep the trip as originally planned, adjusting timing where necessary to work around disruptions. If tours must be changed or canceled due to civil disruption, our operations team coordinates directly with you.
Lost items
Pay attention to your belongings in the van, at the trailhead, and at the summit. You are responsible for your own items throughout the day.
If you have a question about this or any other trip, our travel experts are ready to help with dates, availability and private options.
