The Ausangate Trek + Rainbow Mountain 4 Days is made for travelers who want more than a quick photo stop. This route takes you into one of the highest and most powerful Andean landscapes near Cusco, where the air is thin, the silence feels deep, and the snowy face of Apu Ausangate rises above remote valleys, lakes, stone trails, and alpaca herding communities.
This is not an easy route, and that is part of its value. You will hike above 4,000 meters for most of the journey, cross high passes, sleep in mountain camps, and feel how the Andes change from cold dawns to strong midday sun and clear night skies.
With Machu Picchu Peru Lovers, this trek is planned with a small-group approach, careful logistics, local mountain staff, proper camping equipment, and meals prepared to support your body at altitude.
If you want a route with fewer crowds, open highland scenery, Rainbow Mountain, glacial lakes, hot springs, and a real sense of distance from the busy tourist paths, this trek is a strong choice.
Your guide will pick you up from your hotel in Cusco early in the morning. From there, you travel by tourist van toward Pitumarca, a highland town where the route begins to feel more remote. The road continues toward the Q’esuyuno community, passing canyons, farming terraces, mountain slopes, and small settlements where daily life still follows the rhythm of the Andes.
At Q’esuyuno, you meet the horsemen and prepare your duffel for the pack horses. The hike starts with a gradual ascent toward Kayrawiry, where lunch will be served. After a short rest, the trail continues toward Rainbow Mountain.
This section can feel cold in the morning and bright at midday. The ground is mostly dirt and stone, with some uneven areas. The altitude is already serious, so the pace should be steady rather than fast.
Once at Rainbow Mountain, you will have time to take in the colored slopes and the surrounding highland scenery. Later, you hike downhill back to Kayrawiry, where your tents will be ready. In the evening, the team serves hot drinks and dinner at camp.
Day Highlight: Reach Rainbow Mountain through a longer, quieter trekking route instead of a rushed standard day trip.
Technical Details
The day starts early with hot coca tea. After breakfast, you hike back toward Q’esuyuno before beginning a steep climb to Condor Pass, located at 5,100 m / 16,732 ft.
This is one of the hardest sections of the trek. The ascent is demanding, the air is thin, and the trail can feel slow underfoot. You may pass blue lakes, open valleys, and clear views of the Ausangate Glacier. In some moments, you may hear ice movement or see snow and ice breaking from distant glacier walls.
At the top of the pass, Ausangate stands directly in front of you. The view is wide, cold, and powerful. Below, alpacas often graze across the hillsides, showing how local families live with the mountain rather than apart from it.
After time at the pass, you descend toward the lunch area. The afternoon continues with more trekking toward Ausangate Lake, where the camp is set for the night. Hot drinks are served before dinner.
Day Highlight: Stand at Condor Pass with Ausangate Glacier in front of you and deep Andean valleys below.
Technical Details
After breakfast, you prepare for another full trekking day near the glaciers of Ausangate. This section brings views of lakes, waterfalls, open valleys, and high mountain slopes where llamas, alpacas, and vicuñas may be seen.
The main challenge of the day is the ascent to Abra Campo Pass, located at 5,000 m / 16,404 ft. The climb takes around three hours and requires patience. The path may include stone, compact dirt, and cold exposed sections. In some months, snow may appear on the trail, especially near higher areas.
From the pass, the view opens across the surrounding mountains. This is also a good zone to look for vicuñas, one of the most delicate animals of the Andes, known for their fine fiber and fast movement across high slopes.
After photos and rest at the pass, the route continues downhill to the lunch area. Later, you hike again toward the campsite in Qampa, where the team prepares dinner and the final night in the mountains.
Day Highlight: Cross Abra Campo Pass and walk close to glaciers, waterfalls, and wild highland valleys.
Technical Details
After three days of hiking and acclimatization, the final day begins with breakfast and a hike toward the glacier base area. The route then continues through mountain terrain before descending toward Qomer Lake and onward to Pacchanta.
The trail can feel easier than the previous high-pass days, but your legs may be tired by this point. Expect dirt paths, rocky sections, open slopes, and a long descent. The landscape slowly changes as you approach Pacchanta, a small Andean community known for its hot springs.
Once in Pacchanta, you will have time to enter the thermal waters. After cold nights, long hiking days, and high-altitude effort, this is a simple but deeply satisfying way to close the trek.
After lunch, private tourist transportation takes you back to Cusco.
Day Highlight: Finish the trek with Pacchanta Hot Springs after several days in the high Andes.
